The lead time for OEM metal stamping samples varies drastically based on whether custom stamping dies are required, part structural complexity, raw material availability, secondary surface finishing procedures, and factory production schedules. Two mainstream sample manufacturing modes exist in industrial OEM stamping: rapid prototype sampling without formal production dies, and official first-off-tool (FOT) samples with custom stamping tooling, with distinct timeframes for each category.
1. Rapid prototype samples (no custom stamping die, laser cutting + simple bending fixture)
This method applies to low-volume trial prototypes for design verification, without developing dedicated stamping dies. Factories use laser blanking, manual bending jigs and manual punching to produce samples:
Simple flat brackets, thin sheet plain stamped parts without complex forming: 3–7 working days after drawing and material confirmation.
Medium-complexity prototypes with multiple bending angles, small deep-drawing features: 7–12 working days.
If electroplating, powder coating, anodizing or other anti-corrosion surface treatment is required, add an extra 3–7 days for post-finishing processes.
Standard stocked metal materials (carbon steel, common stainless steel, aluminum alloy) avoid delays, while special customized alloys or ultra-thick plates extend material preparation by 2–5 days.
2. Official FOT samples with fully custom stamping dies (for mass production validation)
For formal OEM projects that need standardized dies for batch production, sample lead time includes die design, CNC machining, EDM polishing, die assembly, trial stamping and dimension inspection, which occupies most of the whole cycle:
Simple single-process dies (only blanking or single bending): Total 10–18 working days (7–12 days for die manufacturing + 3–6 days for trial sampling and revision).
Medium-complex multi-station single dies (combining punching, bending, flanging): Total 18–30 working days.
High-precision progressive dies for automotive, electronics precision components with deep drawing, coining and tight tolerance demands: Total 30–45 working days; multiple rounds of die modification for dimensional compliance may add another 7–15 days.
All surface finishing, cleaning and third-party dimension testing time is counted additionally after raw stamped samples are finished.
3. Expedited emergency sample service
Most OEM stamping manufacturers support rush orders with overtime production: rapid prototypes can be shortened to 2–4 days, while simple die samples can be compressed to 7–12 days with extra expediting fees. However, ultra-complex progressive dies cannot be rushed under 20 working days due to unavoidable CNC and heat treatment processing cycles.
